Atmosphere

Fernanda: At first glance, the place looks small, but as you walk in you can see there's a bit more space, although it's still fairly limited.  It's good for small groups or pairs.  At first there were only a few tables of people, and the volume wasn't too loud, but as more people arrived it got much louder.  We sat at the bar, which seemed like a good idea at first, since we were only going for drinks and a small bite, but as time went on, the seats became uncomfortable, and there wasn't really enough space at the bar for both the drinks and the food.  The place is decorated in a quirky way.  There's probably a story behind it, but we didn't get a chance to ask.

Scott: From the outside, Blood Brothers Brewery looks like a warehouse, and it's easy to wonder if you're even allowed to go through the front door.  This might not be as much of a question in the summer, when the patio is open, but in the winter, it definitely looks closed to the public, even when it's not.  Inside, it's a little cramped, especially if you're moving around, and it definitely wouldn't be called a classy place.  That said, it's evidently a popular venue, considering that it got pretty packed on a weekday (Thursday) afternoon.  Short stays are probably better than longer ones, and due to the size of the place I wouldn't recommend coming as part of a group larger than four people.

Food and Service

Fernanda: Despite there only being one server for the whole place, she was still on top of everything and kept coming by to check on us and see if we needed anything else.  Food-wise, the flavours were not really my thing.  We ordered three dishes and I was not a fan of any of them.

Scott:  My first impression of the service wasn't great.  The bartender/server was busy and it took a while for her to get to us, which is understandable, but she didn't even acknowledge that we'd entered the establishment with a "hello" or and "I'll be with you in a few minutes", despite seeing us sit down.  After that, however, she came by to check on us regularly enough.  The food menu isn't long, but there's decent variety amongst what's there.  I had the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich, which was all right, but very greasy and unexpectedly sweet, and the Roasted Eggplant Dip & Flat Bread, and I enjoyed the curried bread more than the dip.  It's more of a place to have a snack than a meal.  The food prices are fairly reasonable.

Beer

(Back to Front; Left to Right) Angelo Della Morte Sour, Balam Imperial Stout, Paradise Lost - Passion of the Spice Sour, and Black Hand Stout by Blood Brothers Brewing

Fernanda: Their beer list contains several different styles.  I ordered the styles I usually like and I was not disappointed.  The beers were exactly what they were supposed to be: refreshing, sour, crisp.  My favourite, though, was the Balam Imperial Stout, and I'm looking forward to going back and having it again.

Scott: There's a decent amount of beer to choose from, with enough IPAs to keep me happy.  Sometimes, I think the names are more interesting than the beers, but on the whole the drinks are good.  The Balam Imperial Stout has won me over as my favourite beer, despite stouts not usually being my thing.  It's much creamier than any other beer I've had, and compares favourably to cream liqueurs.  I also enjoyed the Devil's Trill X: Trill Communication Farmhouse IPA, which is sweet and tropical while also offering a mildly acidic burn to keep it interesting.

Overall

Probably not a place you'll want to spend long in, Blood Brothers is still a great place to stop by for a high-quality drink and a light snack.  We don't recommend having a full meal here or coming with a large group.  As a brewery it's great, but they need to work on their other elements if they want to become something special.  Definitely check out the bottleshop to take home some of your favourites!
